Rare uncombable hair syndrome is more than a case of tangled hair: It's a "rare genetic hair shaft disorder," says Alan J. Bauman, MD, founder, CEO, and medical director of Bauman Medical Group in Boca Raton, Florida. According to the, "it is usually characterized by silvery-blond or straw-colored hair that is disorderly; strands out from the scalp; and cannot be combed flat" — hence, the name.
Signs of the genetic disorder appear in ages two through 12, according to the NIH — which means that children whose families have a history of the condition are most prone to it. Take, who was diagnosed with the condition at seven years of age – and has handled it like a champ. She spreads awareness for the rare condition on Instagram, where she's garnered over 20,000 followers.
