The 32nd Ukrainian Independence Day was recognized with a flag-raising ceremony at Tom Davies Square on Thursday, which was followed by an evening rally on Notre Dame Avenue
Originally intended as an annual celebration, Ukrainian Independence Day has taken on a more topical significance since Russia began raining missiles on Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022.
Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine has “reawakened traumas,” he said, which date back to Nazi Germany and Soviet occupation, which officially ended on Aug. 24, 1991. Thursday’s flag-raising ceremony also had a group of five Ukrainian children recite poetry about Ukraine, in their native tongue. Gesturing to the poetry-reading children, Sosland noted that more than 500 kids have been killed in Ukraine since the start of the Russian conflict.
At the time, then-mayor Brian Bigger explained that the grassroots-based Bridge of Nations is intended to serve as a symbol of Greater Sudbury’s inclusive and diverse nature, and is intended to remain apolitical.
