Celebrated Ukrainian combat medic Yuliia Paievska, whose body-cam footage was smuggled out of the besieged city of Mariupol before she became a prisoner of war, was part of her country's delegation at the Halifax Security Forum.
They’d heard of Taira’s Angels — the order of combat medics she, a former ceramic artist and martial arts coach , founded and trained during her years in Donbas.
Unbeknownst to Paievska who while along with her daily beatings was being told Ukraine’s army had been crushed, she’d become a folk hero on the other side of the lines. On Aug. 17, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced they’d secured her release via a prisoner swap. Most nights, Paievska sleeps well.
The following day she was to be part of a panel discussion on the war at the security conference and then it was back on a plane to Kyiv.
