WASHINGTON — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Wednesday that “against all odds” Ukraine still stands, as he paid a defiant wartime visit to Washington to thank U.S. leaders and “ordinary Americans” for their support in fighting off Russia’s invasion.
Zelenskyy received a thunderous ovation from legislators during his address at the U.S. Capitol, declaring that Ukraine “will never surrender” and warning that the stakes of the conflict were greater than just the fate of his nation — that democracy worldwide is being tested. Meanwhile, the Senate inched closer to passing a $1.7 trillion government funding bill late Wednesday with supporters pointing to a visit by a gratefulThe measure includes $44.9 billion in emergency assistance to Ukraine and NATO allies, above even President Joe Biden’s request, and ensures that funding flows to the war effort for months to come. The measure would also boost U.S.
Schumer said the worst thing Congress could do now is give Russian President Vladimir Putin any signal that the U.S. was wavering in its commitment to defend Ukraine.“He made it clear that without this aid package, the Ukrainians will be in real trouble and could even lose the war,” Schumer said. “So that makes the urgency of getting this legislation done all the more important.”
Rep. Michael McCaul, who is expected to take over as chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee in the incoming Congress, has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine in its fight against Russia. The Austin Republican said Wednesday night’s session was an historic address by an inspiring leader. McCaul said he plans to have robust oversight of Ukraine assistance when he takes charge of the committee, but he also says the Biden administration has been so desperate not to provoke Russia that it has slow walked providing Ukraine with critical weapons such as Javelins, Stingers and”Everybody knows the longer this war drags out, it’s not to their benefit, and it’s going to lose the will of the American people and the Congress if we can’t finish this thing sooner rather than later,” McCaul...
