Along with the game, they found plenty of love and support from a full house of fans — many of them refugees from the war-torn country and many sporting Ukraine colours and flying the country’s flag — taking in the international exhibition at Father David Bauer Arena. They were then white-hatted by the Dinos before the anthems rang out to lend further emotion to the night.

“It was pretty cool,” agreed Dinos goal-scorer Bradley Schoonbaert, who has Ukrainian in his blood. “We’re obviously not used to having a crowd like that, so the guys were pretty excited. What they’ve been through the last year is unfathomable, so if we can be a part of making their experience better, that’s a cool opportunity for us.”

Calgary Dinos goaltender Carl Stankowski defends against Ukraine’s Yaroslav Panchenko at Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary on Monday, Jan. 2, 2022.“The stories are just insane,” said Dinos captain Noah King. “It’s awesome they have that passion for the game, especially through those conditions. It’s just unbelievable, really. And you’ve just got to respect it, for sure.

For the Dinos, too, it was a chance to get back on the ice after four weeks off and shake the rust off before returning to conference action next weekend.
