Environmentalists cautioned Britain’s main political parties not to water down their climate change promises after a special election result widely seen as a thumbs-down from voters to a tax on polluting cars.

An independent candidate for a U.K. Parliament has turned to artificial intelligence to come up with his campaign promises.

But naturalist Chris Packham said Labour should not abandon green policies to achieve electoral gain. U.K. greenhouse gas emissions have fallen by 46% from 1990 levels, mainly because of the almost complete removal of coal from electricity generation. The government had pledged to reduce emissions by 68% of 1990 levels by 2030, to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars the same year, and to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Conservative lawmaker Jacob Rees-Mogg said “getting rid of unpopular, expensive green policies” would be a vote-winner for the party, which is trailing well behind Labour in opinion polls. A national election is due by the end of 2024.
