“It is one of the most magical of all films,” Roger Ebert wrote in 1999. “Before the days of computer effects and modern creature makeup, here is a fantasy alive with trick shots and astonishing effects, giving us a Beast who is lonely like a man and misunderstood like an animal.” Glass, now 85, secured the performance rights to “La Belle et la Bête” and two of Cocteau’s other films: “Orfee,” a retelling of the Orpheus myth; and “Les Enfants Terribles,” based on Cocteau’s 1929 novel about extremely dysfunctional siblings. “Orfee” became a more-or-less standard opera, “Les Enfants” more of an operatic dance piece.
“In addition to performing this remarkable piece, our partnership with the Philip Glass Ensemble means our students will be guided by artists who have spent decades collaborating with Glass,” Moores Opera Center artistic director Lawrence Edelson said in a statement. “Our audience gets a rare chance to hear gifted young singers and musicians perform a truly unique melding of film and opera as magical as the fairytale that inspired it.
