. But what feels different to me right now is the level of attention on our elected officials in D.C. and in the halls of power in states and cities all across the country.
Similar to the political activation initiated by Donald Trump’s election in 2016, there’s been so much discussion of the political response to the coronavirus. That creates a lot of potential for new political engagement and for reconsidering the limits of our politics. When faced with a novel coronavirus and a pandemic unprecedented in our lifetimes, conventional thinking just isn’t good enough.
There is an old saying in the U.S. that goes something like, “The Chinese word for crisis is the same word for opportunity.” Unsurprisingly, asexplained in a 2009 essay, the idea that the Chinese word for crisis includes opportunity is a mistranslation seized on by profiteers who want to sell people advice on how to bounce back from hardship.
So it is now with COVID-19: We cannot let the necessary life-saving measures that might become a reality be considered a silver lining. The crisis is not anto institute these changes; it is a disaster that illustrates why we need them. The politically impossible feels possible right now, but that’s a curse, not a blessing, when it’s a feeling that comes in response to a plague.
