The opening of the new Ucluelet Food Bank on the Edge facility has been stalled due to extended delays in obtaining power from BC Hydro. Despite working on the process for over four months, the food bank is still awaiting approvals and connection work. The situation is frustrating for the organization, as their current building is in poor condition and may not last until the new location is ready. The food bank is also concerned about the high cost of the power hookup, which could reach up to $100,000. BC Hydro acknowledges the delay and apologized to the organization, promising to expedite the process.

The new home of the Food Bank on the Edge in Ucluelet would be open now if not for one key delay, it’s waiting on BC Hydro for power.

“The most recent reason we were given was the person working on our file has appendicitis. I think the reality is there’s no urgency.”“It’s really frustrating because our building, our old building is really in bad shape and I don’t know if it’s even going to last until we get in here,” said Cris Martin.

“This is a food bank representing a necessary essential service here on the west coast and the challenge with BC Hydro is just getting answers or even just getting timely timelines or milestones. Okay, you’re going to get your design at a certain date,” said Noel. They say the government and BC Hydro should consider the ways it could support the important work of charitable groups.
