Why are more and more children dropping out of sports? It’s just not fun
That is why so many children have turned away from youth sports in massive numbers. The numbers are clear and inarguable — participation rates in most of the major sports are dropping across the board.
Two former UBC Thunderbirds football players, Matt Young and Atlee James, teamed up on a documentary The Cost of Winning, which has already been screened across Canada, 15 states in the U.S. and eight other countries, from grassroots organizations all the way to Olympic committees and education forums.
Young and Simon will be screening the film at the Gerald McGavin UBC Rugby Centre on Thursday, May 30 , but are also treating it as an opportunity to engage and interact with students, athletes, parents, educators and coaches. Young was tapped by the U.S. Olympic Committee to produce its athlete development model, and his film even got the attention of the Lithuanian Olympic committee, which translated and screened it.
Youth sports associations are bleeding participation numbers, like B.C. Soccer, which said its enrolment fell seven per cent between 2017 and 2018. That mirrored a recent study by the Aspen Institute, which recorded a 23.5-per-cent drop in U.S. players ages six to 12 over a five-year period.
