President Trump on social media criticizes aiport control tower, Pentagon and Transportation Safety Board launch investigations

A passenger jet with 64 people on board collided with a military helicopter on final approach into Reagan National Airport Wednesday night, plunging into the Potomac River six kilometres from the White House.

Those on the flight included athletes, coaches and family members who had been in Kansas for a National Development Camp held for young skaters, U.S. Figure Skating said. Images from the river, whose waters had fallen below 2 degrees Celsius, showed a large section of an aircraft fuselage rising out of the water.

“It is a CLEAR NIGHT, the lights on the plane were blazing, why didn’t the helicopter go up or down, or turn,” U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on social media. The Black Hawk helicopter was carrying three soldiers but no senior staff, defence officials told the Washington Post. Its call sign indicated it was part of the U.S. Army’s Priority Air Transport Battalion, which is used to carry military leadership. Investigations have been launched by the Pentagon and the National Transportation Safety Board.
