U.S. military says Iran-backed Houthis shot down the first U.S. Reaper drone on Sept. 10, and the second on Monday
This handout picture released by Yemen 's Huthi Ansarullah Media Centre on August 4, 2024, shows fighters standing around what they say is the wreckage of a US MQ-9 Reaper drone they shot down over Saada governorate. Yemen ’s Houthi rebels shot down two American MQ-9 Reaper drones in under a week, the United States military acknowledged Wednesday, further highlighting the regional spread of the Israel -Hamas war.
The U.S. military said Houthis shot down the first Reaper on Sept. 10, and the second on Monday. Online video showed the downing and the flaming wreckage on the ground afterward in Yemen’s Dhamar province. U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, the Pentagon’s press secretary, said authorities continue to investigate Monday’s downing, but declined to elaborate. He added that a claim by the Houthis that they shot down 10 Reapers since the start of their campaign in November over the Israel-Hamas war was “not accurate.”
Since Houthis seized the country’s north and its capital of Sanaa in 2014, the U.S. military has seen Reapers shot down in Yemen in 2017, 2019, 2023 and 2024.
