WASHINGTON—The Trump administration launched a new phase in its effort to pressure Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to end a civil war that has taken hundreds of thousands of lives, blacklisting Syrian businessmen, officials and family members of the regime leader.
Senior U.S. officials said the action was the first salvo in a series of sanctions planned for the coming months. Targets include other officials and businesses the U.S. says are supporting and profiting from the decadelong war at the expense of civilians.
