The Bureau of Prisons is under scrutiny and it is about time. Now, in a crisis over staffing, inmate treatment, medical care and rising costs, there is the death of Jeffrey Epstein that may lead to much needed change in the agency.
, who headed the BOP until her retirement in 2003. You read that right ... the current head of the BOP retired 16 years ago and has been called to run an agency that is very much in crisis.A survey shows just how few Americans actually believe in the federal corrections system. According to a only 29% of American adults believe Epstein actually committed suicide, while 42% think he was murdered to prevent him from testifying against powerful people.
Epstein's death at the MCC Manhattan has led to a number of people at the facility being put on administrative leave and the launch of a number of investigations. The warden of MCC was reassigned and the Office of Inspector General is also looking into the incident. The BOP has its own investigation, but that is going to be hampered by all of these other investigations.
The people who were working that night at the prison are likely going to start to lawyer up and that means fewer people cooperating.
