In a separate case in New York, another 34 members of China’s national police force were also charged for their roles in harassing dissidents in the U.S. via a social media offensive. A third case had eight Chinese government officials charged with directing an employee of a U.S. telecommunications company to remove Chinese dissidents from the company’s platform.
They are charged with establishing the outpost under the direction and control of a Chinese government official, and with deleting communication with the official from their phones after becoming aware of the investigation, according to the Justice Department. “This prosecution reveals the Chinese government’s flagrant violation of our nation’s sovereignty by establishing a secret police station in the middle of New York City,” said Breon Peace, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York in a statement from the Justice Department.
