The administration, most likely the State Department, is expected to share some of the declassified information as early as Wednesday, but the process continues, the officials said. Some of the countries may already be aware of the incidents through their own intelligence, officials said. They also said some of the countries may not want to publicly disclose that China has flown a surveillance balloon across their airspace. The Biden administration doesn’t plan to name the countries publicly, officials said, and it’s not clear how revealing or new the downgraded or declassified intelligence will be to these countries or to the public.
Once officials concluded that the objects in the previously unidentified sightings were Chinese spy balloons, they chose to conceal from China how they had unmasked the balloon flights, a U.S. official with knowledge of the matter said.
