Henry’s interest in the field grew out of his work as an educational assistant at a community school where the issue of street gangs became pertinent. According to Henry, much of the research on street gangs is localized to a specific community even though members tend to move between communities due to the prison system and foster care system. To truly understand what’s happening, a broad look is needed, he said., and Winnipeg-based Ogijiita Pimatisiwin Kinamatwin, Henry plans to form an advisory committee that will be age- and gender-representative to advise him on what’s happening on the ground and what issues his research should focus on.

The U of S-led research, Singh added, “will help pave the path for transformative decolonization and reconciliation across Canada and serve as a global model.”
