The United Nations’ human-rights agency said that it recorded at least 1,982 civilian deaths in Ukraine since Russia invaded the country in late February, but warned that actual figures could be much higher. The Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights said that at least 2,651 people were injured between the early hours of Feb. 24 and midnight on April 14. That brings the total number of recorded civilian casualties“Most of the civilian casualties recorded were caused by the use of explosive weapons with a wide impact area, including shelling from heavy artillery and multiple launch rocket systems, and missile and air strikes,” the agency said.
The U.N. cautioned that it needs to corroborate figures from areas that have seen intense fighting, such as Mariupol or Borodyanka, meaning that actual figures could be considerably higher. At least 2,700 civilians were killed, including women and children, according to the Ukrainian government.
