A single sentence from QuintaBrunson sold Tyler James Williams on AbbottElementary. “She gave me something outside of myself,” he tells V.F.
How quickly into season one did you feel like the show officially clicked and hit its stride?
The initial click, when I realized we had something really special, was in the pilot. It was during the scene where everybody's coming out to grab the rugs, and I looked at Sheryl and I was like, "This feels like something's coming." She was the only one I could look to, because she's the other one who's been on a network hit like that [Ralph starred on UPN’s]. And then in episode 108, “Work Family,” is when I felt like we hit our prime stride.
It was a combination of both of those. When people have a big hit, a lot of times they try to stay doing the same thing, and I think it burns people out and audiences can eventually get tired of you. So I knew in order for my career to maintain I had to earn a grander respect of a greater audience, not just those that watched. And it felt like it had gotten stale.
