CHANNEL-PORT AUX BASQUES, N.L. — Gertie Prosser wasn’t in Port aux Basques when post-tropical storm Fiona destroyed her house.“I didn’t experience the anxiety like a lot of people experienced that was home and went through it,” she told SaltWire recently.
The Prossers left Port aux Basques on Aug. 6, 2022, and travelled to St. John’s, where Richard was scheduled to undergo radiation treatment.Richard was released from the hospital on Sept. 23, 2022, and the plan was to stay the night in St. John’s and go to Gander the next day. As she drove, her husband scrolled through Facebook and saw pictures of the devastation, but they couldn’t picture what it meant that half their house was gone. That was until someone sent them a picture of their home.
“I can’t go back and change anything, so I have to accept what’s handed to me and go on with my life. That’s how we have to look at it. Some days are harder than others, but this is what it’s supposed to be,” said Prosser.
