Two men involved in a brutal home invasion in Abbotsford , British Columbia in June 2023, were sentenced on January 13th after pleading guilty to two of the charges against them. Matthew Roy, 34, and Alexander Sladeczeck received six and four year sentences respectively, with credit for time served. The incident unfolded on June 23rd, 2023, when Roy and Sladeczeck entered an apartment occupied by a man and his girlfriend.
The Crown prosecutor, Beverley Lane, detailed a horrific attack where the pair used a variety of weapons, including a metal object, knives, household items like frying pans and cups, and even heated kitchen utensils. The victim was repeatedly beaten, stabbed, and burned, leaving him with severe injuries and requiring medical attention. He was discovered by police outside the apartment, wearing only his underwear, covered in blue paint from a paint can used as a weapon, with a swollen face, stab wounds, and burns all over his body. His hair had also been cut during the attack.Police arrived at the scene and apprehended Roy, while Sladeczeck managed to escape through a back window but was later caught. While the motivations behind the attack remain unclear, both lawyers representing Roy and Sladeczeck acknowledged their clients' troubled pasts and substance misuse issues as contributing factors. Justice Maria Morellato, presiding over the sentencing hearing, accepted the joint sentencing recommendations from both sides and emphasized that Roy's longer sentence reflected his more extensive and violent criminal history. A third individual, Ashley Lunan, was initially charged in connection with the home invasion but later had all charges against her stayed
