Two men arrested after high-speed chase that started in Otay Mesa face human smuggling charges [Breaking]

Two men accused of human smuggling and leading Border Patrol agents on a high-speed chase earlier this week in Otay Mesa are facing charges in federal court, according to prosecutors.

Sergio Cervantes-Lopez, 30, and Remigio Sosa-Laez, 19, were arrested Tuesday and are awaiting their first appearance in U.S. District Court in San Diego, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a news release. According to prosecutors, Border Patrol agents conducting surveillance saw Cervantes-Lopez, a San Diego resident, drive a large SUV to an area near Donovan state prison and the George Bailey Detention Facility just after 4 p.m. Sept. 13.Agents reported seeing a group of eight to 10 people enter the SUV before it drove away. Other agents attempted a traffic stop, prosecutors said, but Cervantes-Lopez fled at speeds as high as 90 miles an hour.

Federal prosecutors said Cervantes-Lopez rammed a Border Patrol vehicle and backed into a pickup truck before running a red light and colliding with another SUV during the chase. The crash caused Cervantes-Lopez’s SUV to flip over.Eight other people were in the vehicle with Cervantes-Lopez, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. A follow-up investigation revealed that one person in the car, Sosa-Laez, a Mexican national, had allegedly guided the group across the border on foot.
