Two were killed and many injured after shooting broke out between Iranian border guards and Taliban fighters near a border post between Iran and Afghanistan, a Taliban spokesman said on Saturday.
It was not immediately clear what had provoked the incident but it comes amid tensions between the two countries over water rights.
"Today, in Nimroz province, Iranian border forces fired toward Afghanistan, which was met with a counter-reaction," spokesman for the Taliban-run interior ministry, Abdul Nafi Takor, said in a statement. "During the battle, one person was killed on each side and many were injured." Iran's border guards said in a statement they had "used their superior heavy fire to inflict casualties and serious damage", IRNA reported, without giving details.
