THUNDER BAY - Ontario Provincial Police say two people died and two others were hurt in a collision on the Trans-Canada Highway west of Thunder Bay early Sunday.
The accident involved two tractor-trailer units, and occurred about 3:30 a.m. near Finmark Road in the Shabaqua area. Police have not released the identities or hometowns of the deceased, and there was no immediate word on the condition of the two individuals who were injured and taken to hospital. Traffic on Highway 11/17 was backed up for a great distance as the collision forced the complete closure of the road until late Sunday evening when one lane was reopened and vehicles were allowed to proceed on an alternating basis to the east and to the west.
OPP North West Region traffic incident management and enforcement team members as well as technical collision reconstructions are assisting with the ongoing investigation.
