Two Central Saanich Police officers have been arrested and charged with sexual assault following an investigation by the Vancouver Police Department.

The Vancouver Police Department says two Central Saanich Police officers have been arrested following an investigation into sexual assault allegations. Vancouver Police says Matthew Ball, 43, and Ryan Johnston, 40, were each charged with one count of sexual assault . Ball was also charged with one count of breach of trust. Deputy Chief Fiona Wilson with Vancouver Police will be sharing more details on the arrests at 4 p.m. Tuesday.Vancouver Police started a criminal investigation on Oct.

28 at the request of the Central Saanich Police department after someone came forward with information about two officers who had unlawful sexual conduct with a woman they met while on duty. Ball was charged with incidents that allegedly occurred between Feb. 1, 2019 and Oct. 31, 2023. Johnston’s offences allegedly occurred between Feb. 6, 2020, and March 8, 2020. “Allegations like these are deeply corrosive to the public trust police officers depend on to keep their communities safe,” says Wilson. “To maintain trust in the criminal justice system, we must always be prepared to fully investigate allegations of misconduct and wrongdoing within our own ranks, and to recommend criminal charges when compelling evidence exists.” Ball holds the rank of sergeant and was working as a patrol officer prior to his arrest. Prior to coming to Central Saanich, he was working with the Calgary Police Department, and Wilson says the Calgary department has been informed of this update.“The current evidence suggests that each officer formed separate intimate and inappropriate relationships with the woman at different times after meeting her during the course of their duties,” Wilson says. The woman, who is now in her mid-20s, is being supported by police.
