Two Canadians on quarantined cruise ship among passengers to test positive for coronavirus
Two Canadians among more than 2,000 passengers stranded on a virus-hit cruise ship off the coast of Japan have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, Princess Cruises confirmed.
The ship with 2,666 guests, including 251 Canadians, and 1,045 crew aboard will remain under quarantine for at least 14 days. It arrived in Yokohama port near Tokyo after a 14-day round trip. The virus has killed at least 560 people and struck nearly 25,000 worldwide. Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne says the federal government has secured space on board a U.S. plane to evacuate a “few dozen” Canadians from the Chinese city of Wuhan.
Provided the Canadians on board the first flight show no symptoms, they will head to Canadian Forces Base Trenton, where they will be housed for two weeks under quarantine. So far, 99 per cent of cases of the virus known as 2019-nCov are in China; 80 per cent are from the province of Hubei.
