Bailey has spoken in the months leading up to the film's release about what it means to star as the film's titular character, Ariel, especially as a young Black woman. When her casting was first announced, there was racist backlash to the news of her taking on the role, which the young actress and musician has taken in stride.

“As a Black person, you just expect it and it’s not really a shock anymore,” Bailey told The Face regarding the initial backlash.
