Henri and Renaud's parents live with a weight of culpability, but a trauma expert says, "After the fact, everyone’s a genius. We don't point fingers."
Henri was in shock until he reached the Children’s by ambulance with his mother and Renaud. He was sedated almost immediately. Renaud was crying, but Lefebvre said, “Normally they cry together. They’re identical. When one is hurt, the other is hurt by proxy.”
He would spend nearly a month in the hospital, covered in silver bandages and having multiple surgeries to remove the dead skin and perform skin grafts. Because ofprecautions, only one of his parents could be there at a time and he was not able to see his siblings. It was a longer process for Lefebvre. She felt that she had to be solid in front of the children and extremely focused because there was so much information to absorb, “I was afraid some of it would slip out.”
“I was like, this is perfect. They were so close.” But after a couple of months, the boys started squabbling. A psychologist told Lefebvre: “You want that. When they were perfectly in sync, it was because they were afraid that one was going to disappear. It’s OK for them to feel there is no danger.”
