Former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull never doubted the robo-debt scheme’s legality but questioned his minister over text message when problems with the controversial program were raised in the media.
“The government was not run out of the prime minister’s office, as some other prime ministers have sought to do,” he said. However, Turnbull also pointed to a text message exchange between himself and Tudge from January 20, 2017, in which he questioned the former minister on whether he thought he was receiving the correct advice from his department after concerns about robo-debt were raised in the media.
