The National Capital Commission closed walking trails at Mud Lake in the Britannia Conservation Area as it tries to relocate wild turkeys.

“The NCC Conservation Officer team and biologists have visited the site recently and determined that three male turkeys will have to be relocated off-site immediately due to concerns for the public and the turkeys,” Desjardins said.

Wild turkeys were native in certain parts of Ontario, mainly around Lake Erie, but have never been natural to Ottawa, Brunton said. Once hunted to near extinction, the bird was reintroduced into Ontario in the mid-1980s in response to the hunting lobby. Several walkers have described their own encounters with the turkeys on Facebook pages dedicated to Mud Lake.
