Severe turbulence on a Delta Air Lines flight from Milan, Italy, to Atlanta Tuesday sent 11 people to the hospital with injuries.
Officials did not specify how many crew and passengers specifically were hurt. None of the injuries were life-threatening, but those affected were hospitalized after the aircraft landed safely.
Delta Flight 175, using an Airbus A350, left Milan almost three hours later than scheduled and was preparing to land at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport just before 7 p.m., according to flight tracking website FlightAware. The Federal Aviation Administration told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the flight’s crew reported the turbulence 40 miles northeast of the airport.
Delta said in a statement to WANF, Atlanta’s CBS affiliate, “Our priority is taking care of our customers and crew who sustained injuries. We are grateful for the first responders who met the aircraft to provide medical attention and who are transporting the injured to the hospital.” The airline also provided lodging, food and rebooking for customers who were not injured, according to The Associated Press.
