METROLINX — Tunnelling for the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension is a step closer to completion as Rexy reached its destination.

TORONTO — Tunnelling on the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension is one step closer to being complete with one of the two tunnel boring machines reaching the finish line and breaking through the extraction shaft. The boring machine, named Rexy, broke through the final wall at the Scarlett Road extraction shaft April 26 after two years of carefully excavating over six kilometres of tunnel, which stretches from Renforth Drive to Scarlett Road. Rexy’s twin Renny is not far behind, states a tweet on X by Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria.

Work has already begun to build the eastern underground segment of the line that will run from east of Jane Street to Mount Dennis Station. The Eglinton West extension will connect commuters from Mississauga to downtown Toronto and all the way to the east end. According to the tweet, bringing more than 37,000 more people within walking distance of rapid transit and providing connections between transit systems, like the UP Express, GO service, TTC, and MiWay in Mississauga will provide commuters with options to get where they need to go, when they need to get there.
