Jon Shapley, Houston Chronicle / Staff photographeris fighting to keep her job after the school’s Board of Regents received an anonymous complaint alleging she unlawfully raised several officers’ salaries.
Chief Mary Young sued the HBCU in state district court on Wednesday, claiming that the complaint surfaced shortly after she admonished some of her officers to be professional and avoid “appearing to be mere chauffeurs, errand-runners, and personal assistants for the president,” the lawsuit reads. She also claims that the complaint is legally invalid because of its anonymous nature.
A university spokesman declined to comment, adding that Texas Southern doesn’t publicly speak on personnel or litigation issues.met with her sometime after she admonished her officers, and she informed Young that the regents wanted to fire her. The chief later learned that a purported audit was underway to investigate certain allegations brought forward in the anonymous complaint, she alleges in the lawsuit. After repeatedly asking for a copy, her attorney received a “heavily redacted,” unsigned version.
The anonymous complaint alleges that in January, Young told her staff that she was raising pay for certain officers who would become “lead officers.” She approved field training pay for those people, including two overtime hours per day up to five days a week, the writer said. A supervisor signed off on the timesheet, believing Young had authority, they added.
