Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak enter immigration arms race as both vow tougher Rwanda-style schemes
The Tory leadership candidates have clashed over immigration policy, with both camps claiming their opponents’ plans would do little to solve the migrant crossings crisis.
Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak vowed to heavily crack down on illegal migration and entered into an arms race as to who could go further in their bid toThe Truss camp insisted Mr Sunak’s policies “won’t work”, claiming they amounted to nothing more than “warm words” and warned that his plans to “imprison” migrants in cruise ships off the coast of the UK would be illegal under the Human Rights Act.: “We have a full detailed 10-point plan on how to tackle illegal immigration. They don’t.
Mr Sunak has published a 10-point plan on how he would deliver on the post-Brexit promise to “take back control of our borders”, which included his commitment to the controversial Rwanda scheme. The former Chancellor has also said he would establish a new Small Boats Taskforce to try and stem the flow of Channel crossings, which has seen around 15,000 people make the perilous trip from France.
Announcing his immigration plans, Mr Sunak said: “Right now the system is chaotic, with law-abiding citizens seeing boats full of illegal immigrants coming from the safe country of France with our sailors and coastguards seemingly powerless to stop them.
