Three-year-old Schooner II Stables horse Beach Glass may have saved his best performance on the track for his last race in 2022. | SaltWire

Beach Glass and driver Yannick Gingras during a win earlier in the 2022 season. - ContributedTRURO, N.S. — Three-year-old Schooner II Stables horse Beach Glass may have saved his best performance on the track for his last race in 2022.

“He obviously wanted to be at the front, that’s why when we made the quarter at 25.1, he had inside control; he was showing what he wanted to do, so now our driver just wants him to keep going then.”MacGrath said he “couldn’t be happier” with his horse’s performances over the last couple of weeks especially considering Beach Glass was coming off surgery for an entrapped epiglottis in October and had missed a significant chunk of the season – roughly six weeks.

“The epiglottis itself has a bit of a rough edge and if that membrane gets a little stretched and up over that edge it can catch on a lip and not release; it’s supposed to come with the epiglottis but not go over top of it,” he said. “When it does, it’s what they call an entrapped epiglottis and it screws up their breathing. A horse can do fine with an entrapped epiglottis as long as they don’t exert themselves.

A much livelier and happier Beach Glass following surgery to repair an entrapped epiglottis. Even with having to battle through the heath scare, the three-year-old harness racing star earned $1,187,416 this season. Contributed “To look back on his year and say I was disappointed wouldn’t be fair but, in hindsight, had he been breathing the way he should have been, he probably wouldn’t have been beaten by Bythemissal that day , and he would have been better in the North America Cup. We believe now his breathing did cost us. We did make $250,000 so you shouldn’t be disappointed but, at the end of the day, if he didn’t get everything he was supposed to, or be at his best, it’s disappointing.
