Dr. Justin Blaauwendraat takes on Northern Zone lead role
“It’s an opportunity to give back to the community and do my part, with my abilities and scope, for the betterment of the community,” Blaauwendraat said. The province officially announced the initiative in a press release earlier this month. For the Northern Zone, Blaauwendraat is joined by Dr. Janneke Gradstein of Amherst and Pictou County’s Dr. Brad MacDougall. Other doctors involved include Dr. Ade Akindele , Dr. Michelle Dow and Dr. Meaghan Keating .
The role is, basically, a continuation for Blaauwendraat who has been working with a local committee, made up of community partners, towards the goal. He talked about working with the provincial recruiters who do the leg work of starting the process of connecting with the doctors and having them consider locations in the province.
“I’m meeting with the physicians, telling them about what a day-to-day practice may look like in Truro, in the community, and what living here looks like. Doctors want to hear from other doctors, that is a significant part of recruitment. The recruiters are great, they can give all the information, but they want to get a first-hand view of what it’s like to work and live here … how it’s going to be if they move.
“We met with a doctor a couple of weeks ago who was looking at a couple of other communities and as badly as I may want them here, they’re probably a better fit elsewhere for family and personal reasons, so you have to keep that in mind,” he said. “A win for Nova Scotia is a win for everybody, ultimately, so you are working in that regard too.
