After a State of the Union spent railing about socialism, the president is reportedly prepping hammer-and-sickle ads to skewer Bernie Sanders in 2020
attempting to push Sanders across the finish line in their February 29 election, on the theory that he’ll be the easiest to defeat. But as Sanders has risen in the polls, sources told the Beast, the president has grown more concerned about a matchup, particularly in battleground Rust Belt states, where there’s a chance that working-class voters who carried Trump to an unlikely victory in 2016 could flip. Bernie’s messaging, after all, is focused on class warfare and relieving economic anxieties.
Trump’s relationship with Sanders is itself hot and cold. The president often appears to sympathize with Sanders’s anti-establishment message, and has sided with him in his beef with the Democratic Party machine, accusing the DNC of stealing the nomination from Sanders in 2016 and, most recently, insisting he does not “believe that Bernie” said a woman couldn’t win the presidency, asclaimed. Trump’s sporadic pro-Sanders advocacy might ring true, if Trump had ever said anything true in his life.
As the 2020 race hits its stride, however, Trump is signaling that his goodwill toward Sanders will come to a screeching halt. He’s been teasing a red scare line of attack since the lead up to the 2018 midterms, when the White House released
