Trump wanted to fire IvankaTrump and JaredKushner via Twitter: Book
Trump suggested he would fire the couple, who were both senior White House aides at the time, during a meeting with then-chief of staff John Kelly and then-White House counsel Don McGahn, according to the book Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America by Maggie Haberman. He then said he would just tweet that his daughter and son-in-law would be leaving the White House, prompting Kelly to intervene.
“Kelly and McGahn resisted, expressing their fear that he would not back them once his daughter and son-in-law pushed back,” Haberman wrote. “Kelly stopped him [from firing via Twitter], saying Trump had to talk to them directly before doing so. Trump agreed, then never followed up with the conversation.”Ivanka Trump and Kushner remained in the White House throughout Trump’s term.
The story is one of several that Haberman documents in her forthcoming book, which details Trump’s legacy as a businessman before elevating himself to the presidency in 2016. The book also offers previously unreported details of the sometimes chaotic nature of the White House under Trump’s rule. Trump also engaged in bizarre conversations as he prepared for candidate debates in 2016, the book states. At one point, then-Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus helped Trump prepare by posing as a young transgender student and asking if someone like her could use the girls bathroom.“I have a question,” Trump said to a room full of his advisers, Haberman wrote.
Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America is scheduled to be released next Tuesday.
