President Donald Trump on Wednesday held out the possibility of striking a trade deal with China even as he said he’d be happy with keeping tariffs and asserted executive privilege over Mueller investigation documents sought by Democrats. With the U.S. officially preparing a hike in tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese goods, Trump said on Twitter that China had informed the U.S. that Vice Premier Liu He was coming to Washington “to make a deal.

The president also injected 2020-election politics into his China tweets, saying Beijing was hoping to negotiate with Joe Biden or another “very weak” Democrat seeking the White House. “Guess what, that’s not going to happen!” Trump said. “Neither the White House nor Attorney General Barr will comply with [Judiciary Committee] Chairman Nadler’s unlawful and reckless demands,” said White House press secretary Sarah Sanders in a statement. “The President has no other option than to make a protective assertion of executive privilege,” Sanders said.

The Times’ report comes as the Trump administration is rebuffing House Democrats who are seeking the president’s tax returns. On Monday, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal that the panel’s request “lacks a legitimate legislative purpose.”Sign up for Trump Today and other MarketWatch newsletters.
