Photo: Cheriss May/Zuma Press By Alex Leary May 24, 2019 5:53 p.m. ET WASHINGTON—President Trump intends to nominate the head of the country’s largest organization of police officers to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Chuck Canterbury is currently president of the national Fraternal Order of Police and has been a guest of the White House at a number of law enforcement events. ATF has been without a Senate-confirmed leader since Mr. Trump took office. Currently half of the 10 biggest federal law agencies lack permanent chiefs.

Mr. Canterbury has been the FOP’s president since 2003 and joined the group in the 1980s as a police officer in South Carolina, establishing a local lodge. A member of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Hall of Fame, he retired as a major in the Horry County, S.C., police department in 2004, according to the Fraternal Order of Police.

ATF is a critical player in combating gang violence and illegal firearms trafficking, which are priorities of the president. It is currently led by acting deputy director Reggie Lombardo. The agency employs about 2,600 special agents in 25 field divisions, according to the agency’s fiscal year 2018 fact sheet
