Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says Canada needs to be prepared for tariffs to come into effect when Donald Trump takes office, but cutting off the supply of oil is not the answer.

Premier Danielle Smith spoke with journalists after visiting president-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida this past weekend, saying she's making the case for the two nation's combined economic interests in order to try to dissuade Trump's tariff threat. Lisa MacGregor has the details., cautioned Ottawa against blocking energy exports to the U.S. in response to Trump’s tariff threat on Monday — but Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he wants to keep the option open.

“So if wants to pick a fight with Canada, we have to make sure it’s clear that it’s going to hurt Americans as well,” Singh told a news conference in Ottawa.Ford said that while an embargo on energy and critical mineral exports to the U.S. is the last thing he wants to see, Canada shouldn’t rule out any means to inflict economic pain on the U.S. if the tariff dispute escalates.Canada’s critical minerals exports to the United States were valued at nearly $30 billion in 2023.

If Ottawa moves to cut off energy exports, Smith said, “they will have a national unity crisis on their hands at the same time as having a crisis with our U.S. trade partners.” Alberta’s premier said Canada needs to be prepared for the tariffs to come into effect on Jan. 20, Trump’s first day in office.

“Donald Trump is not rational. You can’t discuss a plan over a meal with him. He is a bully. And bullies understand one thing … that is strength. They also understand pain,” Singh said.Click to share quote on Twitter: "Donald Trump is not rational. You can't discuss a plan over a meal with him. He is a bully.
