President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that Deputy Secretary of Commerce Karen Dunn Kelley will lead a presidential delegation to the final match of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The announcement comes after a feud between the president and the U.S. women’s team co-captain Megan Rapinoe. When asked last week about a potential White House visit, Rapinoe told soccer magazine Eight by Eight, “I’m not going to the f---ing White House.”Trump responded on Twitter, writing, “I am a big fan of the American Team, and Women’s Soccer, but Megan should WIN first before she TALKS! Finish the job!” He then invited the team to the White House, win or lose.
The previous delegation to the Women’s World Cup in 2015 was led by higher profile officials, namely former Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden. This year’s final will be held in Lyon, France, on July 7, and follows the U.S. team’s 2-1 victory over England on Tuesday.
