Prince’s comments are in response to a late night social media post by Donald Trump , in which the U.S. President-Elect says Canadians are. The post reads, in part, “Many Canadians want to become the 51st State. They would save massively on taxes and military protection.
I think it is a great idea. 51st State!!!” A recent Leger poll suggests 13 per cent of Canadians do support the idea, but Prince says it will never take root. “There’s always going to be an undercurrent of people that think ‘Well maybe the grass looks greener down there,’ but most Canadians, if they think about it for more than two seconds, would say no thank you. Sorry, but no thank you.” Canadians and Americans walking along the causeway in Victoria’s Inner Harbour stated concerns ranging from Trump’s leadership to loss of autonomy., the message was predictable. “The recent political shenanigans in Ottawa probably just encouraged him more to repeat the statement he’s made two or three times in the last few weeks,” he says. “To see Justin Trudeau fighting for his political life, this is just too tempting for Donald Trump to throw out that line.” Prince’s position was backed by Republican lawmakers in Washington, D.C. Wednesday. When questioned by media in regard to what was behind Trump’s remarks on Canada becoming the 51st state, Congressman Andy Biggs quipped, “So humour is dead. I think Donald Trump is being humorous.”referring to Trudeau as “Governor.” And while the talk of statehood may be in jest, Trump insists his plan to slap 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian imports is real.
