The president’s Tulsa rally will be reportedly be a multi-stage, multi-speaker extravaganza complete with musical acts

in Tulsa this weekend was already exceedingly ill-advised, with the nation still in the first wave of the coronavirus crisis and Oklahoma among the states suffering a spike in infections. But it turns out that what the president has planned is somehow even worse.

Billed as the “Great American Comeback” festival, this jamboree is reportedly meant to serve both as an advertisement for Trump’s campaign and an attempt to convince Americans that, contrary to the rise in COVID cases and hospitalizations they’re witnessing in their communities, the United States is actually on the other side of the public health crisis. “It’s fading away,” TrumpWednesday evening, claiming that while a vaccine would be “really nice,” it isn’t necessary. “It’s going to fade away.

It’s not, of course. More than a dozen states across the country have seen sharp upticks in confirmed cases. Trump andthe rise merely reflects improved testing capacity—curious, considering they had insisted the previous testing regime was more than sufficient—but the data suggests otherwise. Several states have reported new records of confirmed cases, with hospitalization rates going up as well in the wake of Memorial Day weekend.

Officials are pleading with Trump to call off the event and urging residents not to attend. “I’m extremely concerned,” Tulsa City-County Health Department Directorthis week. “It hurts my heart to think about the aftermath of what’s going to happen.” But the president has responded to critics by comparing his campaign event to the massive demonstrations that erupted across the country in response to the police killing of George Floyd.
