Sun, September 27, 2026 at 3:36 a.m. GMT+3The Trump administration plans to release new vehicle fuel-efficiency standards Monday that would ease requirements introduced under former President Joe Biden, Bloomberg reported.
President Donald Trump first announced plans to loosen the Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards in December, arguing that the changes would reduce vehicle production costs and lower prices for consumers. A U.S. official confirmed that the new standards will be released Monday. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy separately described the coming announcement as a major development for American auto workers.
If the final rule follows the administration's earlier proposal, the fuel-economy requirement for model-year 2031 vehicles would fall to 34.5 miles per gallon from roughly 50 mpg under the previous standards. The Biden-era rules formed part of broader policies aimed at increasing the production and adoption of electric vehicles. Automakers and oil producers had criticised the stricter requirements, arguing that they stretched available vehicle technology and discouraged sales of traditional gasoline-powered cars in favour of electric models.
The planned rollback comes at a difficult time for U.S. fuel costs. Diesel prices have reached record levels, and gasoline prices are at their highest ever for September amid supply pressures linked to the Iran war and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Trump administration officials have been considering measures aimed at lowering fuel prices. A temporary ban on diesel exports is among the options that have been discussed, according to Bloomberg.
Environmental groups have criticised the fuel-economy changes, arguing that lower efficiency requirements could increase motorists' spending on gasoline. The administration argues that easing the standards would lower vehicle prices and support domestic auto manufacturing. The final details of the policy will determine how closely the new requirements match the proposal announced in December and the scale of the change facing automakers through the 2031 model year.
