John Baird, former minister of foreign affairs, called the Aga Khan a trusted adviser, a cherished friend and one of the most impressive individuals he had ever met. Alberta NDP Leader and former Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi, an Ismaili Muslim, said his family owes everything to the Aga Khan’s leadership and guidance and that he was devastated to learn of his death.
“His Highness the Aga Khan leaves behind an immense legacy of kindness, generosity, and humanitarianism,” he said. A jet-setter whose net worth some reports place in the billions, the Aga Khan rejected the notion that the accumulation of wealth was evil, saying what matters is how it is used. Through the AKDN, his initiatives have poured billions of dollars in tithes into building homes, hospitals and schools in developing countries.
