Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attends a virtual meeting of the Canada-U.S. relations cabinet committee as pressure mounts for his resignation.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is participating in a virtual meeting of the Canada -U.S. relations cabinet committee amidst calls for his resignation from both within and outside the Liberal caucus. The meeting takes place as president-elect Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20th nears. Trump has vowed to impose 25 percent tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports unless both countries agree to strengthen security at the American border.
He has also publicly criticized Trudeau on social media, suggesting Canada should become the 51st U.S. state and referring to Trudeau as its governor, claiming the U.S. subsidizes Canada through their trade relationship. Trudeau traveled to Florida on November 30th to meet with Trump, and several of his top cabinet ministers met with the Trump team last Friday. In Ottawa, pressure mounts on Trudeau to resign as Liberal leader following Chrystia Freeland's resignation as finance minister last month. Before the holiday break, Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson stated that Trudeau was taking time to reflect on his future.
