In a much-anticipated appearance before the public inquiry into foreign interference on Wednesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attempted a balancing act by acknowledging the seriousness of state-organized attempts at influencing Canadian elections, while maintaining those elections were conducted in a free and fair manner.
“There are foreign state actors that are interested in playing a role in our democracies or disrupting our democracy,” said Trudeau. “There is always more to do.” However, Trudeau continued, “every briefing I’ve ever got, from all my intelligence…, elections were free and fair, despite attempts by foreign states to interfere.”
