Deaths could soar to 150 a day in the greater Montreal by the end of June if physical distancing measures are lifted, Quebec’s public health institute has warned
MONTREAL — Some Quebec children are back in class today for the first time since March as the province reopens elementary schools and day cares outside the Montreal area.
Quebec’s public health institute has warned that deaths could soar to 150 a day in the greater Montreal area if physical distancing measures are lifted. And new cases could balloon to 10,000 by June amid a potential surge in hospitalizations. Care home figures are not included in the figures. “We must make sure that we are ensuring protection of our older citizens as an absolute priority,” Trudeau told reporters.
While the province is the first in Canada to reopen following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, school officials say it will be far from business as usual. Attendance isn’t mandatory, and some school boards have indicated that most parents are keeping their children home for now.
