Liberal Party suffers another setback in Montreal by-election, raising concerns about Prime Minister Trudeau's leadership and the party's future.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his cabinet pledged to forge ahead Tuesday as they sustained the loss of a second Liberal stronghold in three months and return to the House of Commons in an even more politically precarious position than before Monday’s two by-elections.
Ahead of the by-election in LaSalle-Émard-Verdun, Liberals had privately called it a must-win riding both because of its historic significance to the party and as a way to show that their base in Quebec was holding, in spite of the bad national polling numbers. On his way to a cabinet meeting on Tuesday morning the Prime Minister told reporters there are “lots of reflections” to be made on what went wrong in the race, but he was adamant that the solution was for his government to work harder.
In the wake of the Toronto-St. Paul’s loss the government sought to play down the significance of the defeat as a hyperlocal event driven by the Liberals’ approach to the Israel-Hamas war and the capital-gains tax changes. Some Liberals believed that the same couldn’t be done if they lost LaSalle-Émard-Verdun, and it would force a bigger reckoning.
